WHAT TO EXPECT
-
The in-studio rehearsal gives faculty and dancers the opportunity to see all of the dances in the concert together for the first time. This provides opportunities for troubleshooting potential issues, practicing any quick costume changes, and ensuring a smoothly flowing show. You can let your child know that they may have to wait patiently for their class’s turn, as stopping and starting might be necessary.
Dancers will need to wear their costumes for the in-studio rehearsal, but hair and makeup are not needed. Please note that this rehearsal is mandatory.
-
A dress rehearsal is a run of all the dances in the showcase on the actual stage with professional lighting and sound. This is necessary to give the lighting and sound crew members a chance to watch the performance, create lighting cues, and make sure the music and sound system are running smoothly. This is also the opportunity for the dancers to get their correct entrances, exits, and spacing on stage. You can let your child know that there may be some stopping and starting while the tech crew and choreographers figure out the way to help the dancers look their best!
For two reasons, please make sure that your child’s costume, hair, and makeup are done the way it will look during the show. First, it’s so the faculty and tech crew can see exactly how everything will look and troubleshoot any potential issues. And second, we’ll be taking performance photos during the dress rehearsal! Please note that this rehearsal is mandatory.

There are two performances, this winter, one at 3:30 pm and one at 5:30 pm. All dancers are in both shows.

At Dress Rehearsal
On the day of your dancer’s dress rehearsal(s) at Bender JCC, you will want to note the following times:
1. Arrival Time (Call Time)
2. Onstage Time (Rehearsal Time)
Arrival Time refers to the time the dancer should arrive to the Bender for Check in and getting ready backstage for the rehearsal time onstage. Onstage Time refers to the time the dancer will be actively onstage practicing their dance with the choreographer, lighting designer, sound technician, and backstage crew.
When you arrive at the Bender JCC for your call time, please meet the parent volunteers at the check in booth in front of the Kreeger Auditorium. After the parent volunteer has checked your child’s name off the list, your child can proceed backstage to wait for their piece to rehearse. Parent volunteers will be present backstage to assist dancers in changing, lining up for their dance, and keeping them safe.
If parents would like to wait for their child’s piece to finish rehearsing, they are welcome to wait in the lobby or quietly in the house, where they can watch the rehearsal.
On Show Day
Dancers will need to check in at 1:30pm for Bow Rehearsal.
When you arrive at the Bender JCC for the performance call time, please give yourself time to park and enter the facility. Next, please meet the parent volunteers at the check in booth in front of the Kreeger Auditorium. They will check your child’s name off the list and hand you a dismissal card (children under age 11). This card will be needed to pick up your child at the Backstage Dismissal at the end of the concert. Please hold onto this card - we will not be able to dismiss your child to you without it.
After you’ve picked up the card, your child can proceed backstage, where they will remain until the end of the show. Parent volunteers will be present backstage to supervise.
Please note: there is no food or drink allowed backstage for performers during the performance with the exception of water bottles.

Costumes
Selections
Differently from the Winter Showcase, which focused on a simple demonstration of class progress, the Spring Showcase focuses on an end-of-year performance and celebration!
Costumes for the Spring Showcase are not class attire and are different from what dancers wore in the last show. Please do not assume that your dancer will reuse the costume from the previous show. New costumes will be ordered for the Spring Showcase on April 12.
How to purchase attire.
To pay your costume fee, please go to your Parent Portal, click 'Make Payment', click 'Other' and select the Costume Fee on the drop down to complete payment.
DEADLINE FOR COSTUME FEES: APRIL 1, 2024
COSTUME ORDERING DATE: APRIL 12, 2024
COSTUME FEES WILL BE ACCEPTED, WITH AN ADDED $10 LATE FEE, THROUGH APRIL 12 AT THE TIME OF ORDER.
DANCERS PARTICIPATING IN THE SHOWCASE WHO HAVE NOT HAD THE COSTUME FEES COMPLETED AT THE TIME OF ORDER WILL NOT RECEIVE A COSTUME TO PERFORM IN. NO OTHER COSTUME ORDERS WILL BE PLACED POST APRIL 12.
All Costume Fees ARE DUE APRIL 1, 2024. Costume fees have already been posted to each dancers' account. Costume fees for Kindergarten and Primary classes are $70 ($80 from April 2-12), and for Youth, Tween and Teen classes are $80 ($90 from April 2-12).
Makeup
To streamline the performance day after you arrive at the auditorium, please have your child’s hair and makeup done before they arrive. You can find a makeup for performance tutorial below, as written by a dance mom and approved by the Unity Dance & Movement faculty! Hopefully you enjoy the bits of humor :)
Important: please, no glitter in makeup, hair products, or body products!

First things first: Stage Makeup Shouldn’t Look Like Makeup On Stage!
The important thing to remember is that stage makeup shouldn’t actually LOOK all that much like makeup on-stage. It’s just to keep facial features from getting completely washed out under the stage lights and/or photography flashes. Off-stage, yes, it can look a little jarring, but ultimately the goal is to look at the natural skin/lip/cheek coloring and just…do that, but MORE OF IT. The same color family and warmth levels, but a couple of shades darker.
A few notes on make-up type. I recommend using makeup that is hypo-allergenic, sweat proof, and long-lasting. Dancers should come to the recital venue with makeup already done. It needs to last through several hours of waiting backstage, traveling in the car, sitting with friends, and creating adorable memories.
Before you begin, make sure the dancer’s face is clean. Add a light moisturizer or primer, if desired.
STEP 1: FOUNDATION
Use a make-up sponge or foundation brush to add foundation that is slightly darker than the dancer’s face. (Advanced tip – If you are a pro and know how to contour, use a lighter foundation and add bronzer to highlight bone structure).
STEP 2: EYEBROWS
Use an angled brush to fill in eyebrows and make them more prominent. If your child has light or blonde hair, use a medium brown to highlight their eyebrows. If they have dark eyebrows, match their hair color to simply fill in between the hairs and shape.
STEP 3: EYESHADOW
Apply a dark brown eyeshadow from the lash line to the crease of the eye. Apply an even darker shade in the crease of the eye and blend thoroughly. Apply a white shadow directly underneath the eyebrow.
STEP 4: EYELINER
I know what you’re thinking, “There is NO way I’m putting eyeliner on my child.” If you are working with a wiggly three-year-old, I agree with you. If you’re working with a calmer child, go for it. You can either use a dark brown or black eyeshadow to line their eyes with a thin angled brush or be brave and use black eyeliner for a bigger impact.
STEP 5: MASCARA
Another sharp object…I know. If you are able, apply black mascara to the lashes…VERY CAREFULLY.
STEP 6: BLUSH
Directly under the cheekbone, near the hairline, brush a line of dark pink or peach blush downwards towards the lips. Stop near the apples of their cheeks and blend, blend, blend! Do not solely put blush on the apple of the cheeks or they will look more like clowns than dancers!
STEP 7: LIP LINER AND LIPSTICK
Use a bright red, hot pink, or maroon liner to line the lips. Fill in with a similar color lipstick. This is one item of make-up that will likely need to be reapplied before going onstage. I do recommend a high-quality lipstick to maintain an intense color for longer than 5 minutes.
