Jen Dobbins, Owner

Jenifer Dobbins (she/her), LCCA (Ms. Jen) is a professional dance educator, choreographer, and performer that has honed her craft for 25 years and is qualified to teach ballet, modern, jazz, and musical theater dance. Her passion for ballet pedagogy has led her to licensure in the Cecchetti Method of Ballet, through the Cecchetti Council of America. Her teaching is anatomically sound, inclusive, and nurturing. She has taught students of all ages and abilities, from ages 1 to 80, and from preschool dance to the advanced levels.
Her early training began at Frederick School of Classical Ballet under the direction of Joyce Morrison and she performed with Maryland Regional Ballet, TAWA Dance Company, Equinox Dance Company, and Searls Puppetry. A graduate of UMBC Department of Dance, Jen performed with Baltimore Dance Project and received an Undergraduate Research Award to study with the Jose Limon Foundation.
Jen has taught in a wide variety of institutions including private studios, conservatory programs, recreation centers, and religious institutions. She has directed youth and professional repertory companies, including competition teams, non-profit modern companies, and dancer collectives. Throughout her career, her students have won numerous awards and scholarships, with many going on to dance in college and professionally. In the DC area, she has taught for Joy of Motion Dance Center, The Washington School of Ballet, Ballet Petite, and The Ballet Garden, LLC, a dance program she founded in June 2019.
A resident of DC, Jen endeavors to build meaningful partnerships within the community by offering purposeful programming for dancers of all ages. Outside of the dance studio, Jen's passions include lighting design for the stage, organizing and advocating for the arts, non-profit arts management, and event/performance management.

Amanda Attiya, Educator

Amanda (she/her) is a dancer, choreographer, and Youth Protection Advocates in Dance (YPAD) certified educator based in the DMV. Originally from southern New Jersey, Amanda began training at the age of five in ballet, jazz, tap, acrodance, lyrical, hip hop, and pointe. She was a student teacher for many years, assisted at summer dance camps, and volunteered for the Challenger Sports Dance program providing individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities the opportunity to engage in dance classes.

After a successful career of dancing competitively in her youth, she moved to the DC area to pursue her B.S. in Public Administration from George Mason University. During this time, she served as Vice President of Mason Danceworks and President of SoleTap GMU, and her choreography for these teams resulted in multiple overall awards at intercollegiate competitions. Amanda loves spreading her love for dance with the next generation and teaches at studios, conventions, and intensives across the DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas. She currently teaches at Making Moves Dance Collective and was a featured faculty member at ATTACK Dance Convention in 2023. Her classes center around strengthening exercises and across the floor progressions to prepare dancers to execute choreography.

Amanda continues her training at various studios across the DC metropolitan area with renowned dancers and choreographers. She also performs professionally with the Capitol Movement Technical Company. Outside of dance, Amanda is a State Policy Specialist for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Johanna Barbosa, Educator

Johanna graduated from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a major in Dance and has been studying various dance genres for over ten years. Her areas of expertise include Ballet, Modern (Graham), Contemporary, and Improvisational scores. Johanna's hard work and talent were recognized when she was awarded a full scholarship to the Rioult Dance Company in New York City, where she trained Graham's technique. This experience allowed her to hone her skills and gain valuable insight into the world of professional dance.

Throughout her career, Johanna has had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most renowned artists in the dance world. She has worked with Boris Charmatz on a collective dance project that was showcased in the United States for the first time, as well as with Douglas Becker, Curt Haworth, Tommie-Waheed Evans, Katie Swords Thurman, and Sierra Bell. These experiences have broadened her perspective and helped her grow as an artist. Johanna is also a dedicated teacher. During her time at the university, she created various dance projects that were showcased at Uarts, and since then, she has adopted her passion for teaching by working in charter public schools and local studios. She teaches both recreational dance and concert dance/ traditional classes, and her goal is to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment that allows children to express themselves freely and confidently through dance.

Johanna believes in the power of dance to impact the lives of children in a meaningful way. She sees dance as a tool for personal growth, self-expression, and social-emotional learning. Through dance, children can engage in imaginative play, explore different emotions and themes, and develop their creativity and problem- solving skills. It is her hope that she can inspire the next generation of dancers and instill in them a love for the art form that has been such a significant part of her life.

Talissa Bavaresco, Educator & Admin

Native of Brazil, Talissa Bavaresco (she/her) is a NYC/DC based Dancer and Choreographer with expertise in Ballet, Jazz and Modern Techniques, as well as Theater and Commercial styles. Graduate from the Joffrey Ballet School’s Jazz&Contemporary Program, Talissa has performed with dance companies such as Keigwin+Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Joffrey Ensemble, Humans Collective, Jazz Ain’t Dead, TunanuT; and in independent works by Gabrielle Lamb, Patrick O’Brien, Manuel Vignoulle, Mark Caserta and more. Commercially, Talissa has performed with artist Kimbra, Andrew McMahon and Oriion, danced at PANORAMA Music Festival NYC and at Six Flags’ Fright Fest. Choreographically, Talissa is the Artistic Director of BAVA Dance and has presented works at the Apollo Theater, Bryant Park Dance Series, DUMBO Dance Festival, Dixon Place, The New York Jazz Choreography Festival, WAXworks, HATCH Presenting Series, Holi Hai Festival NYC, Uptown Rising and NACHMO. www.talissabavaresco.com

Amma Bempa, Educator & Admin

Amma began dance training recreationally after 5 years of gymnastics and continued into high school as a member of the varsity dance team/poms. She attended the University of Maryland, College Park and studied kinesiology with a concentration in physical culture, while focusing her electives on dance history, jazz, traditional West African, modern, hip-hop, and ballet. During her college career, she was a member of dance organizations Afrochique (traditional West African/Afrobeats) and Prima Dolls (street jazz/hip hop). She also performed in the Spring 2019 MFA Thesis concert, Tides by Ama Law. As a recent University of Maryland graduate, Amma hopes to use her ongoing studying and training to teach dancers, especially “late-bloomers,” how to move their bodies while being efficient, knowledgeable, and safe.

Dalya Brickman, Camp Counselor

Hi! My name is Dalya, and I am so excited to be working at UNITY this summer! I am a rising senior at CESJDS, and have been dancing since I was 18 months old. I love all types of dance and am trained in ballet, tap, hiphop, modern, and jazz. Outside of dance, I love to bake, workout, and hangout with my friends. I can’t wait to meet you and have an amazing summer!

Ailey Fogel, Admin & Camp Counselor

Ailey is a recent graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school. She has been dancing for many years, was a competitive gymnast and diver, and was the captain of the BCC varsity poms team for two seasons. Under her leadership, the poms team won the Division 2 Poms County Championship this year, and she was named the 2022-23 BCC female athlete of the year. Next year, she will attend Georgia Tech to study neuroscience and physiology and hopes to continue dancing and choreographing.

Sarah Foucher, Educator

I am a process oriented multimedia artist, dancer, choreographer and dreamer. I draw inspiration from people and nature. I believe that we all have an innate creative self and my goal is to provide tools to foster the expression of that creativity. I graduated from Goucher College in 2021 and have studied various dance styles for 19 years including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, West African, Gaga, and Hip Hop. Most recently, I've been teaching modern dance and visual art. I have been primarily based in the DMV area since 2017. When I have space to be creative, I work on independent and collaborative mixed media projects. I interned in teen education at Dance Place for the Junior Staff Program in 2022 and have taught in studios in Baltimore and NYC. I try to meet the needs and aspirations of the individuals that I work with while striving to push technical and creative boundaries. I want to help us all build the courage and confidence to be at home in our bodies. I look forward to meeting you in person and sharing dance with you!

Madeline Garland, Educator

Madeline Garland (she/her) is an ongoing learner in the arts and dance educator in the DC area. Before moving to DC to start her Master’s degree in Arts Management, Madeline graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelors in Science in Social Work. Following graduation, she worked as a school social worker in an elementary school. In this position, Madeline was able to combine her love for working with children and integrating the arts as a healing tool. She is currently the 2023-2024 Fellow in Community Engagement and Education at the Strathmore in Bethesda, MD. 


Madeline received her training in classical ballet from Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater. Her favorite experiences included performing in La Bayadere, the Waltz of the Flowers in the Nutcracker, and original contemporary works by Ashley Walton. It has always been a dream of hers to teach dance and is so grateful to be able to share dance with others. She believes in creating an inclusive space where all feel welcome, appreciated, and supported. 


Navah Gris, Camp Counselor

Hi, I’m Navah and I’m so excited to be working as a counselor at Unity this summer! Dance has been a passion of mine since I was very little and I can’t wait to share it with all of our dancers this summer. I’ve been dancing at Unity for the past few years and my favorite styles that I have taken would probably be Jazz, Ballet, and Contemporary, but I always love discovering different styles. I’m so excited to meet you all soon and have a summer of dancing fun!


Avelyn Heltzel, Educator

Avelyn, originally from Lexington, Kentucky, has over 20 years of dance performance, teaching, and choreography experience. She trained with the Lexington Ballet between the ages of three and eighteen. During that time, Avelyn performed in many ballets including the roles of Marie in the Nutcracker and Peter in Peter and the Wolf. Avelyn also attended the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Lexington for grades 4-12, where she trained in ballet, modern, musical theater, and other forms of dance. Avelyn also attended the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts as a dance major. Additionally, Avelyn has a taught at multiple studios in Kentucky, and choreographed the Lexington Kentucky Ballet Under the Stars pre-show in 2018. 

Angela Ingram, Educator

Angela Ingram, originally from Pittsburgh, PA, is a life-long dancer, and for the past 20 years has taught dance education as a master instructor.

Starting ballet at the age of 9 where she was trained in the Cecchetti Style of Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Hawaiian, Angela built her dance experience through training in New York City which included the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Fred Benjamin, Frank Hatchet, Luigi, Bob Fosse Styles of Jazz, and Martha Graham, Angela then became interested in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian dance, upon seeing how folkloric dance influenced contemporary dance styles such as jazz. She traveled to Havana, Cuba and Bahia, Brazil several times, studying the folkloric (Orisha) dances of Cuba as well as rumba, salsa and son, and folkloric (Orixa), samba, and samba-reggae dances of Brazil.

In the DC area, Angela continues her studies in Flamenco and other folkloric dance techniques, modern jazz with Maurice Johnson, and modern and ballet with Danilo Rivera. Angela has taught at the U.S. House of Representatives, Office of Naval Intelligence, DC Dance Collective, Flow Yoga Center, George Mason University, George Washington University, Joy of Motion Dance center as well as many middle and highs schools in the DC area. She has performed at Fiesta Latina at the White House for President Obama, and in several dance companies. She lectures and choreographs on stories of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban dance, as well as the anthropological relationships of rhythms and dances to contemporary dance styles and Musical Theater. She applies traditional and folkloric techniques, and her experiences to her instruction of Ballet, Modern, Fosse and Luigi-styles of Jazz.

Angela encourages her dancers to understand the cultural context of their dance style to reach a higher quality of movement and to connect with the experiences that originated the dance technique they are bringing to life.

Trevor Kunz, Educator

Trevor Kunz is a tap dance instructor with over 15 years of dance experience. Trevor began his tap dance career at the age of 10, as the youngest member of the youth tap ensemble, Tappers With Attitude, and performed with Capitol Tap and House of Tap. In 2019, he graduated with a minor in dance from Bucknell University. In the DC metropolitan area, he has taught for Knock On Wood Tap Studio and Commotion Dance Studio. His teaching style is rhythmic, with an emphasis on repetition to ensure that students feel comfortable moving their bodies in new ways. Trevor seeks to provide students with inspiring and engaging learning experiences.

Sarah (she/her) is a dancer & educator, actor, singer, songwriter & photographer. She lives & works in the DMV after spending 5 years at Barter Theatre (Abingdon, VA), where she performed in the Resident Acting Company in over 30 productions. She’s been seen at Imagination Stage, Theater J, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Southern Appalachian Repertory Company, and Dollywood, among others. She currently performs throughout the region with various contemporary dance companies & choreographers, in addition to her solo work and musical gigs.

She holds a group fitness certification & Sugarfoot Fitness certification, and is obsessed with all things alignment & strengthening! She most recently obtained licensure through the Cecchetti Council of America. She’s currently on staff at Abundant Dance & Artistry, the YMCA of Frederick County, and frequently substitute teaches and holds pop-up & teaches master classes throughout the DMV and Southeast at institutions such as Opera Lafayette, Adventure Theatre MTC, Levine School of Music, Appalachian Performing Arts, and Frederick County Academy for the Fine Arts.

Her teaching philosophy revolves around fostering spaces that invite dancers to get curious, ask questions, and investigate the line between scientific body awareness and emotional connection that dance so beautifully walks.

Sarah is also a passionate photographer, portraiture being her main focus, a singer and an actress. She teaches theater jazz, contemporary & Jazz fusion, tap, dance conditioning, and ballet. She believes that movement is for everyone at any age, in finding your own personal style of movement, and in focusing on strength and efficiency of movement to bring ease to every area of your life.

Paetyn Lewis, Educator & Admin

Paetyn, originally from upstate New York, currently residing in the DC area is a graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park. She received her bachelors in dance and associates in business. Her training includes hip-hop, modern, tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, and musical theater. She has worked and performed with many artists in the DMV including Ama Law, the University of Maryland’s dance department, Laura Edwards, Becky Hill and many more.

Brigit McNamara, Educator

Brigit is a dancer, educator, and creative from Rockville, Maryland. She spent over 10 years as a competitive Irish dancer, having performed on stages like the Kennedy Center and Wolftrap Theater. After graduating from college in 2019, she went on to pursue more expressive dance art forms including hip hop, contemporary, jazz, heels, whacking, and more. Brigit spent time as a work study student at Joy of Motion in Bethesda, and then began training at Cerdafied Studios and Abundant Dance Studio. She has performed with a contemporary collective called Ramdance Movement, and she now teaches youth after-school classes for Message in Motion as well as weekly classes at Elements Urban Arts Collective. Brigit is passionate about creating intentional safe spaces and empowering dancers of all ages.

Justine Parker, Educator

Justine Parker is a 26-year-old dancer, model, content creator, creative director, and founder ofJusRédor Collection, specializing in Commercial Dance, including heels technique, hip hop, and dancehall. With over 15 years of experience, Justine has been shaping the lives of both children and adults through dance. Born and raised in Silver Spring, MD, Justine knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in dance.

Justine started her training at the Princess Mhoon Dance Institute Studio in Silver Spring, MD, where she received classical training. She also trained commercially with Future Shock DC in Washington, DC. Parker was a member of the National Basketball Association, Washington Wizards, Jr. Wizard Dance Team for several years.

Justine graduated from Hofstra University with multiple degrees, including a BA in Dance and double minors in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. She has trained with some of the most renowned instructors and dance companies, including Tia Rivera, Earl Mosley, Amy Marshall, Charles Smith, Claire Porter, and more. Her diverse training has allowed her to hone her skills and develop a unique style that sets her apart as a dancer.

What truly sets Justine apart is her passion, drive, and determination. Despite being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Lupus, Justine has not let her condition stop her from pursuing her passion for dance. Instead, she has used her perseverance to rebuild her mobility and continue to push herself to new heights.

As an accomplished choreographer, dancer, and creative director, Justine has worked on multiple showcases, live performances, events, music videos, photoshoots, dance intensives, and other creative projects. She is also the founder of JusRédor Collection, which showcases her creativity, style, and love for the community. Her clothing brand is a bamboo athleisure clothing brand structured around bamboo and love, providing customers with clothing that's better for their skin and better for the environment.

With her talent, creativity, and unbreakable spirit, Justine is a rising star in the dance world and beyond. She aims to tour worldwide as a backup dancer for major celebrities, participate in commercials and photoshoots, and inspire dancers worldwide with her testimony.

Alice Ramos, Educator

Alice Ramos is an IYTA (International Yoga Teachers Association) 200hrs Certified Yoga Teacher since 2013. She has also been a Certified Personal Trainer for 20 years and she has taught Hatha Yoga classes at some of the most prestigious fitness clubs in Puerto Rico like Equilibrium Fitness Club, Yoga & Pilates Studio and LIV Fitness Club. While living in Puerto Rico, she had several interventions at radio and TV programs, talking about the benefits of the Yoga practice. She has also created and instructed several workshops related to the practice, energy, alignment, and meditation. During the last year 2021, she was traveling from Puerto Rico to DC while teaching Yoga and doing personal training online. She is also completing a book about her Holistic approach to health, which she wants to publish during this year. Six months ago, she decided to move to DC and now she is finally ready to instruct presential group classes after more than two years of personal and professional growth with her online work. She firmly believes that meditation is the ultimate purpose of the Yoga practice since it is the path to self-realization. Alice has the intention to taught Yoga in a way that her students can understand and receive the physical, mental, and energetic benefits of this ancestral practice.  

Da’Shown Rawl, Educator

Da’Shown Rawl (he/him) studied Ballet and Modern at the Baltimore School of the Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Rawl is a graduate of the prestigious Dance Department of George Mason University (GMU). While at GMU, he got the opportunity to perform works by Alejandro Cerrudo, Andrea Miller, David Grenke, Doug Varone, Lar Lubovitch, Mark Morris, and Robert Battle.


Da’Shown Rawl also teaches at The Washington Ballet, N’Ferno Dance, and Joy of Motion. He has been teaching and choreographing in the DMV and New York City area since the age of 16. In 2015, he founded RawArts Dance Company and has created works at the Baltimore School of the Arts, George Mason University, various companies in the DMV Area, and festivals in New York City. Some of his recent choreographic endeavors have included a dance for film, Just A Thought, and Cold Fire: A Story of Emotions, his first full-length work. Da’Shown’s passion for choreography was the catalyst for the establishment of the RawArts Dance Company. 

Alina Sharipova, Educator

Alina Sharipova is a professional DanceSport Ballroom and Latin dance instructor with more than 10 years working experience. She’s a prize winner of both Ukrainian and European dance competitions. Alina is also a winner of the Ukrainian Championship in 10 dances categories of Latin-American and European programs.

Alina teaches Ballroom Solo Dance classes for beginners.

Erica Stuchel, Educator

Erica Stuchel (she/her) is so excited to be part of the Unity Family! Erica studied dance her entire life, as she grew up in the studio so did her passion for dance and performing.  She spent her early career studying Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Pointe, Ballroom and Hip Hop. Outside the studio, Erica was extremely involved in musical theater and was part of over 20 musicals by the time she was 18. By then she was not only performing but choreographing several shows a year.  

While pursuing her degree in communications at George Mason University, she continued her dance education with a minor in dance.  After graduating Erica was determined to keep dancing and continued studying at many DMV studios this time training in Heels, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Jazz, Technique and Street Jazz along with NFL and NBA styles.  She starting teaching jazz, hip hop, lyrical and technique in 2021 at PowerWorks Dance in  Virginia.

Erica believes that dance is a way for dancers to become confident in themselves and in all aspects of their lives in and out of the studio.  She teaches how to be powerful and perform while also keeping technique and the strength of dance. 

In addition to dance, Erica works as a public relations specialist at W2 Communications in McLean, Virginia.  

Jozanne Summerville, Educator

Dance has benefited my life in so many ways. With 30 years in the art form, I have had many opportunities to teach, learn, perform, advocate and grow from my dance experiences. As a youth educator, I seek to pay it forward by creating opportunities in the classroom for the next generation to explore their movement possibilities. In all of my classes, I encourage dancers to produce at their best, allowing space for talent and creativity. This is my way of supporting the next generation of movement makers of all types. 

A native of Virginia, Jozanne studied dance at Barton & Williams Dance School and then went on to graduate from Sweet Briar College with degrees in Mathematics and Economics, and a Minor in Dance. She has a passion for the development of young people and sustainable creativity. Jozanne now lives with her girlfriend, their dog and two rescue cats in a proudly self-renovated home in NW DC.
